Shadow and Silence: A House Designed by Ar. Francis J. De Los Reyes

In the quiet of night, a house softly glows behind a veil of timber slats. Its form is outlined only by the light that escapes between its ribs. Designed by Architect Francis J. De Los Reyes of Bacolod City, this residence is a study in restraint, rhythm, and memory.

The wooden slatted façade, both minimal and expressive, filters light and views with poetic control. It shields the interior while allowing glimpses of the gabled structure within. This subtle layering hints at traditional forms without relying on nostalgia.

Inside, a sculptural staircase rises beside a wall of repurposed balusters, mesh, and carved wood elements. It creates a tactile storybook of assembled memory. At its base, patterned tiles ground the space in quiet familiarity. A second staircase made of steel grating offers a striking contrast with its geometric lines and raw materiality.

The material palette of metal, dark timber, and concrete leans toward the industrial but never feels cold. Light and shadow soften the structure’s clean lines and add depth to its bold details.

This home, while quiet in form, speaks with clarity and intention. It does not rely on ornament but on discipline. Through proportion and honest materials, it becomes a space that feels both grounded and timeless.

In the hands of De Los Reyes, the house is more than shelter. It is a vessel for reflection, where architecture invites stillness and makes space for memory.
